Programme profile
This programme is for students with a broad interest in the political, historical, social and cultural aspects of the ongoing process of European integration. It is impossible to understand European integration from the perspective of only one discipline. Politics, law or economics alone are not enough to solve the European 'puzzle'.Therefore, the European Studies programme has a strong interdisciplinary character, drawing on fields such as: history, philosophy, political sciences, social sciences, economics and law.
The University uses Problem-Based Learning (PBL), an innovative, student-centred instructional method widely used at Maastricht University. Students work in tutorial groups, collaboratively seeking practical solutions to open-ended, real-world problems. Instructors act as facilitators, informally giving help when and where it is needed. This allows you to build independence and develop research skills.

Year 1: The Idea of Europe; History of European state- and nation-building; Academic Writing and Presentation Skills; Identity, Culture and Citizenship in Europe; Europe and Global Politics since World War II ; What is Good Science?; An Economist's Point of View; Micro/Macro Economics; EU Politics; Sources of the EU
Year 2: Institutional Law of the EU; Negotiation Skills; Analysing the European Policy Process; Quantitative Data Analysis; International Relations; Cities, Regions, Borders; Qualitative Research Skills; Making a European Market; International Economics
Year 3: Substantive Law of the EU; External Relations of the European Union; Culture & Identity; Quantitative Data Analysis; Power & Democracy; Language Policies in Europe; Lifting the Iron Curtain; The Process of EU enlargement ;Practicalities of Policy Making Plus a wide range of elective choices

Entry Requirements
Three A-Levels plus 3 GCSEs
Scottish Students are required to have a SQC with 2 Advanced Highers and at least 4 Highers. Subjects to include Maths.
